Memories
_ video for the Media Wall at ACC Gwangju _ 2'56" _ 2020

This video is a site-specific work for the ACC (Asian Culture Center) in Gwangju. The ACC building opened at the end of 2015 after ten years of planning and construction. For its development, an area of approximately 12 hectares of urban residential and commercial space was demolished. The video "Memories" features footage from the film set of the Korean movie "화려한 휴가" ("May 18"), which is set at the location of the current ACC, as well as scenes recorded before and during the demolition of the area for the center's construction. The site of the current ACC, situated directly adjacent to the former Jeollanam-do Provincial Office, was a symbol of the May 1980 democratization movement, which was bloodily suppressed by the South Korean military government; the provincial office served as the final bastion of the citizens' movement during the Gwangju Uprising. The 360º video imagery of the work is processed through a "video echo"—a custom effect I developed using the software 'Jitter'—which increasingly alienates the images with every repetition.
